Estimation of the Population Density of Goniurosaurus hainanensis

Abstract:Previous studies relating to Goniurosaurus mainly focus on the descriptions of new species and their phylogenetic systematics, and few discuss the population density of Goniurosaurus in China. In the present study, the status of Goniurosaurus hainanensis population in the Diaoluoshan National Nature Reserve on Hainan Island was assessed. Two different elevation ranges were chosen as sampling areas (areas A [551-688 m] and B [289-448 m]) in the reserve. The population density of G. hainanensis was investigated using the mark-recapture method from July to September 2019, and then calculated by using the Schnabel and Lincoln index methods. The population density of G. hainanensis calculated by using Schnabel method in sampling areas A and B was 501 ind./hm2 and 1 999 ind./hm2, respectively, while that calculated by using Lincoln index method was 583 ind./hm2 and 1 403 ind./hm2. Both results indicate a decrease of G. hainanensis population density with increasing elevation.
